Recently Chartered Secretaries Australia, a peak professional body, endorsed a parliamentary proposal to introduce amendments to allow companies to make annual reports available on the Internet and require hard copies to be sent only to investors who request them.

Corporate websites will need to be sufficiently sophisticated to display an electronic version of the annual report and financial statements whilst continuing to have a statutory obligation to deliver hard copy free of charge to any shareholder who requests it.

We view this as a progressive move and one that will benefit both the investor and the company.

It will require, however, implementing a recognisable strategy to ensure the expectations of the shareholders are met in the current climate of ever increasing information demands. It must also meet the requirements of the company to communicate its position and role in an ever more crowded corporate arena.

This means establishing a strong brand presence and a desire to demonstrate a respect for shareholders and stakeholders by delivering a professional Annual Report both electronically and in hard copy.
